Su Embroidery

Su embroidery or su xiu 苏绣 originates in the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu province. Suzhou is often called the "Venice of the East" in celebration of its rich history and culture. Above all, it is famous for its production of world-renowned embroidery, which ranks amongst the highest quality embroidery in the world.

Su embroidery is known for using fine silk, balanced compositions and dense stitching with both thick and thin threads. These techniques require generations to master and the skills are passed from mother to daughter. An embroiderer has to remain seated for a long period while remaining focused throughout. A single piece can take months or even years to finish. First, the embroiderer secures a firm piece of silk over a wooden stretcher. The design is then sketched onto the fabric by drawing simple outlines. These are then filled in: the more intricate areas use thinner thread.

In 2006 Su embroidery was designated as an intangible cultural heritage of China, and in 2018 the technique was selected as one of the first of China's national traditional craft revitalisation and protection objects.
