Miao Hmong women are proficient in using many different embroidery stitches and skills, some of these skills are only found in Miao Hmong embroidery. The commonly used embroidering stitches are Satin Stitch, Braid Stitch, Cross Stitch, Seed Stitch (called Dazi stitch by Miao), Coil Stitch and Horsetail Stitch.

Satin Stitch

It is the most commonly used technique. The finished work is bright and delicate with strong effect of solid and eye-catching.

Braid Stitch

A unique technique popular in southwest of Guizhou. Plait silk threads into braids and sewn down to the cloth.

Cross Stitch

A popular embroidery technique. The needlework is simple and patterns are often geometric.

Seed Stitch

Seed stitch is a fun and simple stitch pattern that makes raised stitch areas that look like seeds.

Coil Stitch

Coil stitch is also known as bullion stitch, caterpillar stitch, worm stitch that wraps the threads several times around the needle. A massed or dense structure can be created using this versatile stitch.

Split Thread Stitch

It belongs to Satin Stitch which demands high skill as the silk thread is split into fine threads. It is more delicate, fine and smooth.

Horsetail Stitch

Horsetails are couched by silk threads. It is used as frame to Satin Stitch to make the embroidery more vivid and solid.
