About Akha Hand Stitching
Living in the mountainous regions of northern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Yunnan province in southwest China, the Akha people consider art as something one wears on their person. Each hand stitched piece created by the Akha incorporates sophisticated techniques of appliqué, couching and cross stitching to create designs that are at once ethnic, personal and aesthetic. The skills of stitching are learned from a young age, and techniques are passed from generation to generation; as such, the sartorial practices of the Akha have long been celebrated as being of exceptional quality. Akha craftspeople are also renowned for never making the same pattern twice, ensuring that each design is a unique work of art.Akha stitched products can be divided into three distinct styles: Ulo style, which utilizes running stitching to create lines, zigzags and connected xs; Lomi style, a distinctive use of appliqué where diamond shaped strips of cloth are stitched onto the main body and the border is outlined with twined threads; and Pamee style, where cloth is decorated with cross-stitched geometric designs. These cushion covers make use of Ulo and Lomi styles.
