About Hani Embroidery

Living in the uplands of Northern Thailand (known as Akha), Laos, Vietnam and Yunnan Province in Southwest China, Hani people regard clothing as a form of art. Because they don’t have a written language, Hani people carry their cultural heritage through the intricate patterns of their embroidery which tells the story of Hani migrant ancestors. The uniqueness of embroidery is given by the combination of cross-stitching techniques to create the intricate colourful designs: usually patterns are abstract representations of natural elements, including straight lines, loops, zigzags, squares, spirals and triangular shapes. Hani believe that everyone is unique and carries her story through her clothing, and that is why each piece is exquisitely unique.
