About Dai Handwoven Brocade
This bag is heartfully handwoven by the talented Dai ladies living in the subtropical forests of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, Southwest China. In Dai unique tradition, the art of Brocade is an essential skill for women to get a good marriage. The fabric, usually cotton or silk, is handwoven with a handloom, a traditional device made of vertical wood-shafts. Sitting at the centre of the wooden frame which holds the warp in tension, the weaver encases the horizontal weft threads through by pushing a treadle to lift and lower the heddles. Dai use red, black and white to exalt the natural patterns of their clothing, beautifully representing horses, deer, elephants, peacocks, trees and flowers, thus revealing their peaceful spirit, in deep connection with Buddhist religion. In 2008, Chinese Government nominated the Dai Handwoven brocade technique national intangible cultural heritage.
