About Lahu Handwoven Brocade

Each bag is originally designed and handwoven by the skilful Lahu ladies, living in the Yunnan Province, Southwest China, northern Thailand and Vietnam, where they preserve their primitive and natural lifestyle. In Lahu tradition, the art of brocade is regarded as an important skill for becoming woman. This handweaving technique is realised by weaving cotton fabric in sophisticated geometric patterns with the use of a backstrap loom. This simple device is made of two wooden bars, one fixed and the other attached with a strap around the back of the weaver who leans back to stretch the warp and interweaves the weft through the string heddles with the use of a shed roll, which are raised simply by loosening the stretch. This bag is an important part of Lahu daily clothing both for men and women. It usually comes in a mix of bright colours such as red, black, yellow and blue, featuring traditional patterns which are geometric representations of landscapes, rainbows, stars and animals.
